The Federal Trade Commission is expected to release its assessment report
tomorrow on website data compliance. In today's Washington Post they
report that few companies on the World Wide Web are following government
privacy guidelines by telling users how personal information is collected
    and used.

According to Ira Magaziner, Senior Staff Advisor to President Clinton,
"What's going on now is not providing adequate privacy protections.
Information is being collected about people without their knowledge or is
being collected with their knowledge and being used for other purposes.

Attorney Christine A. Varney, a former FTC Commissioner, now with the
lawfirm of Hogan & Hartson, is reported as saying that the FTC report will
substantially increase pressure on companies to comply. The report when
released tomorow will be a factor at the Commerce Department conference on
Internet privacy which will take place later this month.

Ms Varney is quoted as stating: "The report is a siren call. We are
running out of time. We are reaching a critical juncture."

Acording to the Post article: "Few people outside the FTC have seen the
report, but privacy specialists and industry leaders who have been told
about its findings said it amply documents that the great majority of
companies have ignored calls to take greater care in their use of customer
    data."

PLEASE REFER TO RECENT REQUESTS BY THE NCISS (NATIONAL COUNCIL OF
INVESTIGATION & SECURITY SERVICES) TO WRITE TO YOUR SENATORS AND
CONGRESSMEN ALONG THE LINES OF THE NCISS DRAFT LETTER POSTED LAST
    WEEK.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation in getting the word out to
congress not to close our information sources.

    NCISS Legislative Committee Member
