NEW YORK--A juvenile pleaded guilty today to stealing more than 500
passwords that America Online users had entered into their
       computers, federal prosecutors said.

They said the youngster, called "John Doe" in court papers, pleaded
guilty in Manhattan federal court to one count of unlawful
       interception of electronic communications.

Prosecutors said that John Doe stole the passwords by using
"Trojan horse" computer programs that conceal other programs.

They said Doe sent Trojan horse programs to AOL users via electronic
mail messages that contained attachments. When users received the
email messages and clicked on the attachments, the concealed programs
       would become activated.

The Trojan horse would then record the AOL users' keystrokes,
       including their passwords.
