British prison forced to change its locks

    MANCHESTER, England (September 15, 1998 2:55 p.m. EDT
http://www.nandotimes.com) -- The high-security prison in this northern
city plans to change all its locks -- including those on the cells of
prisoners -- after discovering that a videotape made to educate new
inmates included close-ups of prison keys.

Officials at Her Majesty's Prison Manchester, better known as Strangeways,
said they feared the videotape could be paused, details of the keys noted,
and replicas made to aid escape.

The film, which also was distributed to community groups, shows a chaplain
doing his rounds and features a close-up of his keys.

"The mistake has only recently come to light," the prison said in a
statement. "The prison has not experienced any related security problems
    since."

Strangeways became Britain's most notorious prison after inmates went on a
rampage during a 25-day rooftop siege in 1990.
