    | A Microsoft spokesperson suggested that it was probably an isolated
    | incident. "We have used the service many, many times in many different
    | ways, and this was the first time that this sort of thing has come to our
    | attention," the spokesperson said.

MS spin control. What they seem to be saying is that this vulnerable
system has been put into use "many, many times", and yet since Microsoft
didn't know about it, no one else did either. I wonder how many of those
addresses are sitting in someone's home database right now, and whether
those other databases where this service was used contained information
more sensetive than addresses and phone numbers.
