November 3, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Computer workstations in the National
Astronomical Observatory (http://www.nao.ac.jp) and the Communications
Research Laboratory (CRL) (http://www.crl.go.jp ) of the Ministry of Posts
and Telecommunications were accessed illegally, and confidential
information may have been accessed, an informed source said.

The hackers/crackers have reportedly intruded a few times since June. The
incidents were not brought to light until the beginning of October.
Universities also reportedly came under attack.

Some hackers are apparently able to set a program to extract information
and it is still unclear how they intruded and what information was
    accessed, according to the CRL.

The CRL replaced an entire system, with an aim to prevent another
    intrusion.
