While the perpetrator remains unknown, Lucasfilm's StarWars Web site was the victim of its first hack today. The vandalism consisted of a list of names, presumably those of the hacker's friends, according to Lucasfilm. Entertainment Web sites have proved a popular target for hackers because of their potential for generating publicity, and hacking attempts on Starwars.com have been more than routine, a site administrator said. "We get maybe 20 or 30 hacking attempts per day," said Marc Hedlund, director of Internet development at Lucasfilm. "None has been successful before this." Hedlund said it was a "social hack," as opposed to a software-based attack. Social hacking refers to the penetration of networks through human error, such as the careless revealing of passwords. Hedlund declined to specify how the hackers got through. The graffiti came down a few hours after it appeared this morning, he said. -o- Subscribe: mail majordomoat_private with "subscribe isn".
