Novell's [NASDAQ:NOVL] UK operation has entered into a major sponsorship arrangement with the National Criminal Intelligence Service (NCIS) for the publication of NCIS's Trawler Report, a strategic criminal assessment on Internet and computer crime. Plans call for the report to be published in mid-June.The NCIS is an offshoot of the British government and the UK police authority, and was originally set up to offer high technology and other leading edge advice to the various arms of police forces across the UK. The NCIS is now at the forefront of the fight against serious and organized crime in the UK and throughout the world. Developing intelligence on serious criminality, NCIS works with law enforcement agencies, governments, and other relevant agencies, both nationally and internationally. Normally, its activities are shrouded in secrecy. However, the sponsorship agreement, set up between Mark Steele, head of corporate communications at NCIS, and Martin Smith, Novell's licensing manager for the Europe, Middle East & Africa regions, will allow for the publication of an unclassified version of the report, in addition to the restricted document aimed at law enforcement practitioners. Smith said that the public interest in this field of criminality is phenomenal. "The report will give an eye-opening account of how new technology is being abused for criminal ends and will stimulate debate about the ways in which such activity may be eliminated or contained," he said.
