WASHINGTON, June 12 (UPI) -- The U.S. Transportation Security
Administration has labeled a group of the world's top oceanography
students "security threats" because they applied for a new ID card
required to get access to U.S. ports -- even though the agency
acknowledges they are not suspected of any terrorism link.

"That really alarmed the students and faculty," James Yoder, vice
president for academic affairs at the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institute, told United Press International. "What we're worried about is
how far that characterization will go in the government's computers."

The students, foreign postgraduates in the world-renowned oceanographic
study program the institute runs with the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, applied earlier this year for the new Transportation Worker
Identity Credential -- an ID card required for anyone who needs
unescorted access to U.S. port facilities.
