SAN DIEGO - A Solana Beach man was arraigned Monday in federal court
after being indicted for computer intrusion and extortion, officials
said.

Bruce Mengler, 60, was arrested Friday after a bench warrant was issued
for his arrest.

Authorities said he intentionally caused damage to a protected computer
of Maserati North America and also extorted the company in early 2008.

The indictment states that Mengler hacked into the company's Web site on
or about March 9 and identified potential customers' personal
identification numbers and contact information.

The company had mailed fliers to potential customers inviting them to
test drive Maserati vehicles and receive gift certificates redeemable at
Omaha Steaks. Those customers were directed to visit the company's Web
site and enter a unique personal identification number printed on the
flyer in order to receive the gift certificates, officials said.
