The head of the Senate Intelligence Committee signed on to a letter late
last week questioning whether a former CIA director appointed by the
nation’s spy chief should be allowed to keep his security clearance.

Intelligence Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein , D-Calif., signed the
classified letter, written by Sen. Tom Coburn , R-Okla., raising
questions about former CIA Director John M. Deutch, who in 2001 was
prepared to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of mishandling
government secrets before President Bill Clinton pardoned him.

Dennis C. Blair , the director of national intelligence, appointed
Deutch this year to an advisory panel reviewing spy satellite programs,
which has recently concluded its work.

Sources familiar with the letter said it was signed by all the
Republican members of the Senate Intelligence Committee, as well as
Democratic members Evan Bayh of Indiana and Bill Nelson of Florida, in
addition to Feinstein.

Coburn said Wednesday that the letter to Blair laid out “details of what
happened” regarding Deutch’s “whole management” of the CIA and
“significant breach” of security, referring to his storage of classified
information on unsecured home computers, which drew a Justice Department
investigation.

“What signal does that send to people lower down?” Coburn said.

As CIA director, George Tenet suspended Deutch’s security clearance, but
Tenet’s successor, Gen. Michael V. Hayden , restored it in 2007.
