THE new owner of a web hosting company ruined by a devastating hacking
event over the Queen's Birthday weekend has not ruled out an inside job.

The 30-minute hacking episode that led to the downfall of
Victorian-based distribute.IT has been referred to the Australian
Federal Police for investigation. The AFP would not comment further.

The distribute.IT hack is regarded as particularly vicious because it
sought to destroy both live and backup data, rendering recovery
virtually impossible.

In about 30 minutes, hackers wiped four of distribute.IT's eight
servers, destroying 4800 accounts and taking down websites representing
about half the customer base of 10,000.

The devastation extended to distribute.IT's reseller network, its main
revenue stream, and people and organisations that resold domain names
and developed websites as client services.
