Samuel Tso served in the Marines in the Pacific and was vice president of the Navajo Code Talkers Association for nearly a decade, the Arizona governor's office said in a statement. Tso was born in Arizona in 1922 and served in the Marines from 1943 to 1946. He died on Wednesday, the office said. About 400 code talkers used a unique cipher based on the Navajo language to encrypt messages sent by field telephones and radios throughout the Pacific theater during the war.
