Former U.S. Navy submarine warfare specialist Robert Patrick Hoffman II
was arrested Thursday morning on charges of turning over classified
information to undercover FBI agents posing as representatives of the
Russian Federation.

Hoffman, 39, of Virginia, allegedly gave the agents information on how
to track U.S. submarines.

He faces life in prison if convicted.

Hoffman is a 20-year Navy veteran trained in cryptology and ranked petty
officer first class and who served as a submarine warfare specialist.

He retired from active duty in November 2011.

Prosecutors said Hoffman's security clearance led him to sign documents
during his time in the Navy swearing he would not release sensitive
information.
