Sorry to prolong this thread, but I must say: If memory serves me (which it normally does) my old USR sportster (and probably the couriers) have a VOICE result code. It's trivial for the modem to figure out if it has connected to another modem or if there's some "yelling idiot" on the other end. I'm not sure of the technical details of how the sportster decides it has connected to a human (maybe an assumption, if it's not a fax or another modem, it MUST be a human even though it may be a VMB or a telco recording).
