        Sun announces the release of patches for Solaris(tm) 8, 7, 2.6,
        2.5.1, and 2.5 (SunOS(tm) 5.8, 5.7, 5.6, 5.5.1, and 5.5) which
        relate to a vulnerability in ufsrestore(1M).
    
        Sun recommends that you install the patches listed in section 4
        immediately on systems running SunOS 5.8, 5.7, 5.6, 5.5.1, and
        5.5 which use ufsrestore.
    
    2.  Who is Affected
    
        Vulnerable:                SunOS 5.8, 5.8_x86, 5.7, 5.7_x86, 5.6,
                                   5.6_x86, 5.5.1, 5.5.1_x86, 5.5, 5.5_x86
    
        Not vulnerable:            Solaris 8 04/01*, Solaris 8 Maintenance
                                   Update 4* and later update releases
    
    *  To determine if one is running Solaris 8 04/01 or Solaris 8 Maintenance
       Update 4 or later, check the contents of the /etc/release file.
    
    3.  Understanding the Vulnerability
    
        The ufsrestore utility restores files from backup media
        created with the ufsdump command.  A vulnerability has been
        found in ufsrestore which, if exploited, could allow an
        unprivileged local user to gain unauthorized root access.
    
        This issue was discovered by Job de Haas (jobat_private) of ITSX BV
        Amsterdam, The Netherlands (http://www.itsx.com).
