    ______________________________________________________________________________

    - -----------------------
    - --- Issue Specifics ---
    - -----------------------

This bulletin is a followup to SGI Security Bulletin 20021101-01-P.
There are two ToolTalk packages. 20021101-01-P covers the ToolTalk package
included with CDE. This advisory covers ToolTalk package included with IRIX.

It's been reported that there are vulnerabilities in the IRIX ToolTalk
    rpc.ttdbserverd daemon.

See the following URLs for additional details:

      http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2002-20.html
      http://www.entercept.com/news/uspr/08-12-02.asp

This vulnerability has been assigned the following CVEs:
    http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2002-0677
    http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2002-0678

SGI has investigated the issues and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be
implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

These issues have been corrected with patches and in future releases of IRIX.

    - --------------
    - --- Impact ---
    - --------------

The rpc.ttdbserverd binary is not installed by default on IRIX 6.5 systems.
It is part of the optional IRIX ToolTalk package (tooltalk_eoe.sw.runtime).

To determine the version of IRIX you are running, execute the following
    command:

      # uname -R

That will return a result similar to the following:

      # 6.5 6.5.16f

The first number ("6.5") is the release name, the second ("6.5.16f" in this
case) is the extended release name. The extended release name is the
"version" we refer to throughout this document.

To see if rpc.ttdbserverd is installed, execute the following command:

      # versions long | grep rpc.ttdbserverd
      f 1868 699 tooltalk_eoe.sw.runtime usr/ToolTalk/etc/rpc.ttdbserverd
      l 0 0 tooltalk_eoe.man.manpages usr/ToolTalk/man1m/rpc.ttdbserverd.z
      l 0 0 tooltalk_eoe.sw.links usr/etc/rpc.ttdbserverd

If the output of the command is similar to the above, then rpc.ttdbserverd
is installed and the system may be vulnerable.

    - ----------------------------
    - --- Temporary Workaround ---
    - ----------------------------

There is no effective workaround available for these vulnerabilities.
SGI recommends upgrading to IRIX 6.5.18 or installing the appropriate
    patch from the listing below.

    - ----------------
    - --- Solution ---
    - ----------------

SGI has provided a series of patches for these vulnerabilities. Our
recommendation is to upgrade to IRIX 6.5.18 or install the appropriate
    patch.
