NIPC Daily Report 18 January 2002

The NIPC Watch and Warning Unit compiles this report to inform
recipients of issues impacting the integrity and capability of the
    nation's critical infrastructures.

NIPC Advisory urges restraint in posting infrastructure information. The

National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) issued Advisory 02-001
to heighten awareness concerning the dissemination of infrastructure
related information on the Internet. Infrastructure related information
is being accessed with increased frequency from sites around the world.
Accordingly, the NIPC encourages applying common sense in deciding what
to publish on the Internet. The advisory is available at
    http://www.nipc.gov/warnings/advisories/2002/02-001.html

IE privacy flaw still causing leaks. New privacy?enhancing controls in
Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6.0 can be rendered useless by a
long?known security flaw in Windows Media Player. The flaw allows a
malicious Web site to create a "supercookie" that, despite privacy
settings, is capable of tracking people using any version of Internet
Explorer and Netscape Navigator. (ZDNet UK, 16 JAN)
