Pro-Islamic hackers gear up for cyber war, experts say. Pro-Islamic hackers
are on the frontline of a potential new cyber war after the end of a
cease-fire by "hacktivists" and virus designers that followed the September
11 attacks on the United States, Internet experts say. Pro-Islamic hackers
are escalating attacks against countries backing the U.S. war on terror and
its campaign against Iraq, while the "Bugbear" worm and last week's strike
on the Internet backbone signal that cyber villains are again on the prowl.
London-based computer security firm mi2g said on Tuesday that October had
already qualified as the worst month for overt digital attacks since its
records began in 1995, with an estimated 16,559 attacks carried out on
    systems and Web Sites. Source:

ICANN targets DDoS attacks. In the wake of last week's unprecedented DDoS
(distributed denial of service) attack against all 13 of the Internet's
root-name servers, the U.S. Government and ICANN, one of the Internet's main
governing bodies, are considering changes to help protect the DNS system
against future attacks. The most immediate and significant changes will
likely come from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers,
which is holding a meeting this week in Shanghai, China. The body, which is
ultimately responsible for maintaining the root servers that contain the
master list of Internet domains, will hear recommendations from its Security
and Stability Advisory Committee on securing the edge of the Domain Name
    System network. Source: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,651686,00.asp
