November 6, Information Week - Piecing together huge security network. The
national-security network being floated in Washington might piggyback on
dozens of smaller networks. The National Guard's 3,000-node, coast-to-coast
network - GuardNet-could be the cornerstone of a proposed interstate
communications network for sharing security information among various levels
of government, Homeland Security Office CIO Steve Cooper told IT industry
execs this week. "By linking what exists, we can move a lot faster," Cooper
said. He's referring to the network as an information expressway. The
proposed communications system would string together some existing defense
networks with those used by state and local governments. It would include
    networks used by law-enforcement, criminal-justice, and first-responder
    agencies. Source. http://www.informationweek.com/story/IWK20021106S0002

November 7, Associated Press -Experts have made an important change to the
13 computer servers that manage global Internet traffic, separating two of
them to help better defend against the type of attack that occurred last
month. Verisign, which operates two of the root servers, moved one computer
overnight Tuesday to a different building in an unspecified location in
northern Virginia and onto a different part of its network, company
spokeswoman Cheryl Regan said Wednesday. Verisign said the change was
designed to ensure that a hardware outage or focused attack targeting part
of its network could not disrupt both servers. The last such move to any of
the 13 servers occurred in 1997. Source.
