I'm still using 2.4 and in the process of investigating moving our entire
build over to kbuild-2.5 which is why I did the work. Do I need it now ?
No, but I expect to need it soon, sometime in the next few weeks would be a
    reasonable guess.

If we have it in 2.4 we've added a few files, but it leaves it up to the
user which build mechanism they use for both 2.4 and 2.5. End users get to
choose which build mechanism they want to use independent of which kernel
    they want.

As the work's already been done it means that Stephen, Serge and Nick don't
have to remember to do different stuff in each tree, which means there's
less likely to be a mistake, and we're ahead of the game for when it does
    make it into kernel.org :-)
