atomic pointer writes

I've posted a beg to the linux-kernel mailing list, in the
hopes that someone can definitively answer the question
"are pointer writes atomic on all SMP architectures supported
by Linux"?

Again, if anyone knows, or at least knows for some subset,
please let me know.  I'll summarize if I get enough to summarize.
