For experimental purposes, *you* can add any hooks you want to your own
copy of the kernel source. Go nuts, experiment.

For mainstream inclusion, MAC layer hooks would compromise GigE network
performance, which is unnacceptable to the network maintainers.

Assuming that by "MAC" you meant the network card.
