The library component has always been released under
the LGPL, so commercial software may use/link it (see toplevel
README).

The rest is GPLed - but I am open to persuasion on
that topic too. If it were to be made a reference 
or basis for a standard, I'd have no problem relicensing
it under BSD or similar.
