There has been some discussion on this list about a centralized place on the web to store sample Log files as well as a knowledge base discussing what each log event means. I'd like to introduce a website that we've been working on for the last few months: SplunkBase. SplunkBase is a wiki system geared towards IT troubleshooting. Think: Wikipedia for Log events. It's content generated by the IT community for the IT community. While the site does have Splunk in the name, we plan to keep it as vendor neutral as possible. All the content is licensed under the Creative commons and hence can be used, shared and copied by others. http://www.splunkbase.com It has a number of features that I think you'll find useful. - A full blown wiki system: Example: http://www.splunk.com/base/MailLogAnalysis - Forums: http://www.splunk.com/base/list/forum (most of these are Splunk focused, but this will change) - A place to post and share log files: http://www.splunk.com/splunkbin/add http://www.splunk.com/splunkbin/448 - Descriptions of individual Source Types (such as syslog) http://www.splunk.com/base/sourcetype:linux_messages_syslog and of course actual Event types. http://www.splunk.com/base/eventtype:SP-CAAAAXD We have a good start in content. There is additional content work to do. As a log analysis professional, I'd love to get your feedback on the site. What we're doing right/wrong. What would you like to see? Finally I'm looking to hire a full time person to help manage/develop content for SplunkBase. If you know someone who is passionate about log files / troubleshooting, is an excellent communicator and thrives in building online communities, please let me know.
