[owl-users] moving to 2.6/OpenVZ kernels

Hi,

This is to inform you, the Owl users, of major changes being made to
Owl-current.  We have finally replaced the default kernel with a 2.6
OpenVZ one, and moreover we have rebuilt all userland packages with the
new kernel headers.

This means that we're dropping support for Linux 2.4 kernels in
Owl-current.  The Owl-current packages being pushed out to FTP mirrors
today might not work with 2.4 kernels anymore!  Of course, we're making
proper 2.6 kernel sources and patches available at the same time, but
you do need to be careful to make sure you do not try to "blindly"
upgrade a 2.4 kernel system to these newly rebuilt packages without also
upgrading the kernel (make the kernel upgrade first!)

New ISOs and a "proper" announcement will likely be available shortly.

BTW, the new ISOs for 32-bit x86 will now make use of and require a
"686" CPU and PAE (Pentium Pro and above).  We feel that this matches
the current demand better than our old default of "586" (and thus no
PAE and no NX bit support by default).

Those who do not want to upgrade their systems "like that" yet, but
would like to keep the systems up-to-date with security fixes, may
continue to use Owl 2.0-stable.  It remains maintained (until our next
release), and it still uses Linux 2.4 kernels by default (although the
Owl 2.0-stable userland also runs fine with 2.6 kernels if you like).
