BILL FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Oct. 31, 2001 - The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC)2, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to training and certifying information systems security professionals worldwide, today announced the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has approved reimbursement under the G.I. Bill for the cost of the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and the Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) examinations. "Extending the G.I. Bill to include CISSP and SSCP reimbursement gives veterans working in the information security profession an opportunity to qualify for the most widely recognized certifications in the industry," said James E. Duffy, managing director of (ISC)2. The CISSP credential, requiring three years experience in information security, is an independent and objective measure of professional expertise and knowledge within the field of information security. This certification has gained importance as a key component in the selection process when personnel are being evaluated for management-level information security positions. The SSCP credential, requiring one year experience, is designed for network and systems administrators who implement security policies, standards and procedures on a variety of hardware and software platforms. According to Gartner, Inc., by 2004, 50 percent of the Global 2000 will hire executive staff for the centralized development and implementation of information security policies. In the next three years, Gartner reported information security certification will be required for 60 percent of chief information security officers and associated staff. "In today's business climate, this new licensing and certification benefit can open doors for many veterans," said Richard Barry, director of veterans' education for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. "Certification is becoming particularly critical in the information security industry as employers contend with a shortage of highly skilled professionals." Retroactive to March 1, veterans who have remaining eligibility under the G.I Bill can receive reimbursement for the CISSP and SSCP certification exams. Individual claim processing can start by downloading the application on G.I. Bill Web site http://www.gibill.va.gov/Education/SampleLCapp.htm The G.I. Bill is federal legislation that created a comprehensive package of benefits, including financial assistance for higher education, for veterans of U.S. military service.
