Why didn't the roomate just shut the door (or refuse to open it in the first place)? You *never* have to talk to the FBI under *any* circumstances. You may have to talk to INS agents at the border or lawyers or judges in court and conceivably police on the street in a few cases, but you never have to talk to peace officers at your door (even if they *have* a warrant). And you certainly don't have to step outside unless they arrest you.
