[I've always enjoyed what I've read of John Lott's work (though I'm hardly familiar with all of it). Let this be a lesson on the RISKS of static IP addresses and trying to be pseudonymous through IP address obscurity. If you would be embarrassed by what your pseudonym does or says, remember to use a reasonable form of identity-obscuration. For weak pseudonymity that would survive Julian's investigation but not a subpoena, use a different dialup account. For stronger pseudonymity, use a remailer or a public 802.11 node. --Declan] --- Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2003 08:50:24 -0800 (PST) From: herror <blackmarketsat_private> Subject: the pitfalls of static IPs To: declanat_private X-UIDL: 7f5d21b6b427e5affd6898b9770b67c9 declan, Have you seen Julian Sanchez's post about "More Guns, Less Crime" author John Lott's pseudonomynous newsgroup alter ego. Funny twist ending (except to Mr Lott I'm sure) to a long tale of lost data and questions of academic integrity. it's here: http://juliansanchez.com/2003_01_01_notesarch.html#90216211 best, tom brennan phila pa http://agendabender.blogspot.com/ ===== "Blackmarkets for a Blue Century" ------------------------------------------------------------------------- POLITECH -- Declan McCullagh's politics and technology mailing list You may redistribute this message freely if you include this notice.
