--- Date: Fri, 10 Jan 2003 00:17:44 -0500 Subject: Sacramento bars requiring ID card swipes From: Nathan Walls <nwallsat_private> To: Declan McCullagh <declanat_private> Declan; Some Northern California bars (and I imagine elsewhere) are requiring hard card swipes of state ID from patrons at the door, gathering a print-out of name, sex, age and address. Some establishments have made firm policy to have door staff mandate a swipe. Chevy's, a chain Mexican restaurant near CSU, Sacramento, had it's state liquor license temporarily suspended in 2002 for serving to minors later involved in a fatal accident. Chevy's is also facing a suit seeking $25 million over the accident. This is, by bar owners' admission, a tactic to limit their liability to state ABC and civil suit in similar circumstances. Of course, it's also being viewed as an opportunity for misuse of a fair amount of personal information since data retention policies vary by establishment. http://www.sacticket.com/nightlife/story/5839603p-6805951c.html (disclosure: I'm a former Sacramento Bee employee and currently work for another branch of their corporate parent.)
