Here's some more background on Nguyen Dan Que, who seems to be a brave and principled fellow: http://www.hrw.org/advocacy/internet/dissidents/3.htm http://www7.nationalacademies.org/humanrights/Letter_from_Nguyen_Dan_Que.html http://www.hdvnbtdt.org/article.php3?id_article=96 ------- Original Message -------- Subject: Writer on trial for condemning Vietnamese censorship 7/23/04 Date: Fri, 23 Jul 2004 06:40:05 -0700 (PDT) From: Tuyet A. If you post it, please remove my e-mail address, thank you. Best, Tuyet --------------------------------------------------- The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) calls for the immediate release of writer Nguyen Dan Que, who spent 16 months in detention without charge. The Ho Chi Minh City People's Court will finally try Que on July 29 on charges of "taking advantage of democratic rights to infringe upon the interests of the state." Mr Que, 62, was arrested four days after he had written an essay in which he condemned the government's strict control over information and the media. In the commentary, which was distributed online, Mr Que wrote, "The state hopes to cling to power by brainwashing the Vietnamese people through stringent censorship and through its absolutist control over what information the public can receive."
