Clear Sailing in Florida Primaries Thanks In Part to e-Voting

Arlington, VA, Sept. 1, 2004 – The Information Technology Association of
America (ITAA) today saluted the cooperative efforts of election
officials, volunteers and electronic voting technology for yesterday’s
successful U.S. Senate primary election in Florida.

ITAA called the election a testament to the reliability and security of
Direct Recording Electronic (DRE) voting machines.

According to media reports, electronic voting machines anchored
successful elections in 15 Florida counties, and officials reported only
isolated problems with their DRE operations. Anecdotal voter response
has also been positive.

“This election was an important opportunity to put to rest the
unreasonable suspicion directed at these machines in recent months, and
we consider it a success,” said ITAA President Harris N. Miller. “This
election stands in stark contrast to the Presidential Election of 2000,
which opened the 21^st century with a grueling manual recount of ruined
punched card ballots befitting the 1950s.”

“We trust the critics who have been so eager to sow seeds of doubt with
the voting public about electronic voting machines will now speak out
about the successes of Florida,” concluded Miller.

ITAA's Election Technology Council represents America's leading
electronic voting system vendors. The Council works to raise the profile
of electronic voting, identify and address security concerns with
electronic voting, develop a code of ethics for companies in the
electronic voting sector, and make recommendations in the areas of
election system standards and certification. Learn more about the
Council and electronic voting at www.electiontech.org
