The two most significant players in intrusion detection are getting
into bed. Internet Security Systems has announced it is acquiring
    privately-held firm Network ICE. .

The all-stock deal is worth approximately $195 million and is expected
    to close in June 2001.

According to the firms, Network ICE's desktop applications and
security management products complement ISS's existing network and
server-based security software and will help the development of
technologies that better protect mobile and remote desktops.

Network ICE's technology applies protocol analysis techniques to the
detection of Internet based attacks which might slip into a network
protected by a firewall alone, whereas ISS' relies more heavily on
    signature analysis technology.

Tom Noonan, president and CEO of ISS, said in a conference call that a
technological objective of the deal was to develop high-end intrusion
detection technology, which combines protocol and signature analysis.

ISS has said it intends continue to support products from both firms
but plans to develop a "best of breed" product by the end of the year.
