    10 August 2001

A TOTAL of 2,503 computer hacking cases were detected between 1997 and
    June this year.

Energy, Communications and Multimedia Ministry's parliamentary
secretary Chia Kwang Chye, quoted the figures yesterday. Chia said the
hacking included "mail bomb" and other computer virus.

However, he said, the cases of hacking did not involve the red worm
    code alert.

"The national Information, Communication Technology and security
response centre monitoring the computer system from 8am between Aug 1
and Aug 5 found that a total of about 1,930 computer systems were
raided with the virus." Chia said this when winding up to points
raised by several Senators debating the Digital Signature (Amendment)
    2001 Bill.

Commenting on the act, Chia said the amendment made to the Bill would
provide security and protection to individuals to ensure that their
personal data would not be abused.

"Those who want to use others' personal data through the computer must
get written approval from them," he clarified.

"The Act will also provide any individual the right to obtain a copy
of the data before it can be used by other parties." He said the IT
security department under Mampu was set up in Jan 1, this year in
order to monitor and ensure the security aspect of computer usage and
    multimedia in the public sector.

"Officials at the department are in the midst of preparing the
government's security policy guidelines," he added.

Among others, he said, the monitoring activities would include
security domain data or information, computer peripherals,
    communication and database.

Chia also added that a circular on the guidelines for the policy would
be circulated to all government departments soon.

On the Multimedia Super Corridor, he said that as at Aug 3 this year,
a total of 541 companies had obtained MSC status.

"This number far exceeds our target to appoint some 500 companies with
    the MSC status.

"We are hopeful of receiving some RM6.6 billion from the investment
    made by the companies."
