AUSTRALIA - Australia's retail banks have been dragged into a brawl
between Communications Minister Stephen Conroy and Google over the
search giant's admission that it illegally collected data from home
Wi-fi networks.

The Australian Bankers Association yesterday hit back at suggestions by
Senator Conroy on ABC television that Google's vehicles might have
collected online banking information as part of their activities.

"If you had an unprotected Wi-fi router in your house and you were doing
a banking transaction or transmitting personal information, they could
have hoovered it up, sucked it up into their machine," Senator Conroy
said on ABC2's breakfast program.

The allegation is a headache for institutions which annually spend
hundreds of millions of dollars to shut hackers and crooks out of their
online banking facilities.

ABA policy director Tony Burke dismissed Senator Conroy's comments and
sought to reassure bank customers that their details were safe.
