The Australian Bankers Association yesterday hit back at suggestions by Senator Conroy on ABC television that Google's vehicles might have collected online banking information as part of their activities. "If you had an unprotected Wi-fi router in your house and you were doing a banking transaction or transmitting personal information, they could have hoovered it up, sucked it up into their machine," Senator Conroy said on ABC2's breakfast program. The allegation is a headache for institutions which annually spend hundreds of millions of dollars to shut hackers and crooks out of their online banking facilities. ABA policy director Tony Burke dismissed Senator Conroy's comments and sought to reassure bank customers that their details were safe.
