Here are some more URL's. Thanks to everyone who contributed. Recently some people have gotten permission errors from URL's I've sent out here, particularly for sites from scholarly publications. The problem is that those sites transparently check whether the user is coming from a site that has a site license. UCLA has some site licenses (though not at as many as I'd like), and in those cases I breeze through where others get stopped. Sometimes, as in the case of Science magazine, the resulting page clearly indicates that the site knows where I came from. Usually, however, there are no clues. I could go to the lengths of testing the URL's on a public machine, but I don't have time. So all I can really do is apologize. But do let me know when it happens, so I can be aware of the particular site in the future. As a separate issue, I do include URL's from sites that require free registration, like as the New York Times or Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. You'll just have to decide for yourself whether you want to register. election Harris' Office Set for Bush Win Before Recount http://www.gopbi.com/news/special/harris_recount.html Data Permanently Erased From Florida Computers http://www.nytimes.com/2001/08/08/politics/08FLOR.html Bush's lawyer admits that the Supreme Court was wrong http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-vote07.html jargon watch: it's easy to find precedents if you define the issue vaguely (he makes a show of quoting critics but gives no serious account of their views) http://www.law.com/cgi-bin/nwlink.cgi?ACG=ZZZGU4YQ2QC Election Reform Fails When It Is Left to Whim of States (right overrides state law when it suits them and invokes federalism otherwise) http://www.usatoday.com/news/comment/columnists/wickham/2001-08-07-wickham.htm politics Bush's Weird Tax Cut http://www.nybooks.com/articles/14382 White House Secretly Assured That Faith-Based Plan Will Allow Proselytizing http://www.au.org/press/pr8601.htm http://www.worldmag.com/world/issue/08-04-01/cover_1.asp they are anti-democratic vandals who operate beneath a fog of lies http://www.nytimes.com/2001/08/08/opinion/08KRUG.html President Bush's World Is Turning http://prospect.org/webfeatures/2001/07/kuttner-r-07-30.html Bush foreign aid appointee has a history of religious discrimination http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/219/metro/US_nominee_scrutinized_on_religion+.shtml AMA analysis of the Bush-Norwood "compromise" on patients' rights http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/article/1611-5140.html Greens Say Republicans Crashed Their Party http://seattlep-i.nwsource.com/local/34242_green07.shtml funny/scary diary of seven-plus hours spent watching Fox Conservative News (some people prefer convenient lies to the complexity of real journalism) http://www.buzzflash.com/BuzzScripts/Buzz.dll/SUB security Code Red II analysis http://www.eeye.com/html/Research/Advisories/AL20010804.html http://www.securityfocus.com/frames/?content=/templates/article.html%3Fid%3D232 http://grc.com/codered/coderedii.htm The Code Red II ARP Flooding Effect http://grc.com/x/talk.exe?cmd=article&group=grc.news&item=174 Code Red Worm Shows Up in Asia http://www.cnn.com/2001/WORLD/asiapcf/east/08/07/virus.codered/ more Code Red II press coverage http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/internet/08/07/code.red.two/ http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010807/tc/tech_codered_dc_32.html http://www.usatoday.com/life/cyber/tech/2001-08-08-code-red-2.htm http://www.abc.net.au/news/newslink/nat/newsnat-9aug2001-7.htm "patching and maintaining his Microsoft IIS Web servers is almost a full-time job" http://www.zdnet.com.au/biztech/security/story/0,2000010455,20248328,00.htm New Virus Travels in PDF Files http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-6808673.html Mixing Advertising and Credit-Card Activation http://catless.ncl.ac.uk/Risks/21.57.html#subj9 more news from Planet Microsoft Microsoft's Supreme Court appeal http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/trial/appeals/08-07petition.asp Microsoft Seeks Supreme Save http://www.law.com/cgi-bin/nwlink.cgi?ACG=ZZZD6MY94QC Making Microsoft Play Nice? http://writ.news.findlaw.com/commentary/20010807_buchanan.html everything else Distributed Networks Create the Great Wide Open http://www.redherring.com/index.asp?layout=story&doc_id=1990019199 The Cosmic Struggle Over Your Digital Identity http://www.business2.com/articles/mag/0,1640,16677,FF.html Face-Scanning Camera in Tampa Misidentifies Man http://www.oklahoman.com/cgi-bin/show_article?ID=732840&pic=none&TP=getarticle Police Use of Force in Genoa Raises Outcry Weeks Later http://www.nytimes.com/2001/08/08/international/08ITAL.html Italian police rioters were trained by Los Angeles sheriffs http://cbsnews.com/now/story/0,1597,305304-412,00.shtml Florida Police, Rescue Squads Test Wireless Technology http://www.computerworld.com/cwi/story/0,1199,NAV47_STO62891,00.html.html Secrecy News http://www.fas.org/sgp/news/secrecy/ Sorry, Mr. Gilder, No Excuses http://www.thestandard.com/article/0,1902,28512,00.html Suit: Clear Channel Is an Illegal Monopoly http://www.salon.com/ent/clear_channel/2001/08/08/antitrust/print.html New York State on the edge of rolling blackouts http://www.cornell.edu/SpecialConditions/ Education Review http://coe.asu.edu/edrev/ this guy built the best coffee houses (until corporate clones took over and destroyed them) http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/california/la-000064399aug08.story end
