My understanding of IS security is kind of hit and miss so I appreciate
hearing all the questions. I am not as concerned about the question or the
person who asked the question as the number of people who responded to it.
It seems like after four of five people said that it was a scam that that
should have been enough discussion on the topic and we need to move on. I
am sure there are topics that can use further explanation; however, this
topic did not justify the number of response which were all saying basically
the same thing. We need to use some common sense and stop spamming everyone
on the list with responses that add very little to the information that has
    already been provided.

I believe that if we start criticizing one and other (especially if we do it
Anonymously), we will stop users from seeking help and knowledge. It would
be better to help educate others who are not at your level of expertise by
providing guidance and locations for research. I know that you did in your
letter, but without putting the person down. You could have sent an email
just to the person if you truly wanted to help.

I hope we don't start making fun of people for asking questions. If we do,
several people will stop asking questions or drop off our list.

IRT kenemm@private? I believe we are all grown-up and don't feel anyone is
going to wait for me after school to beat me up. (ha ha)

I can't speak for John or anyone else but, in all honesty Heidi, you ask
    questions that are
often marginal and deal with very elementary issues and reflect both
    ignorance, which is no-
fault, but also a failure to do any basic research at all, which I have a
    problem with.

For example a Google search on "Nigerian fraud" yields the Secret Service on
    the first page of
    hits: http://www.ustreas.gov/usss/alert419.htm

The USSS has a database for these frauds and you can either fax them to
    (202) 406-5031 or e-
    mail them to 419.fcd@private

On Denial of Service attacks, the first page of Google hits yields Dave
    Dietrich's page up at
U.Washington with a huge amount of information including ingress and egress
    filtering.

So I would encourage you to try some basic research before you show your
    ignorance in the
future and I would encourage the group to respond to any elementary
    questions with URL's
instead of a quick summary paragraph and apply the truism, "if you teach a
    (wo)man to fish."

IRT anonymous? Heidi, I believe we've met and I don't feel comfortable
    criticizing you without
fear that it will come back to haunt me.
