Being the Check Point representative, I have a few things to add to Ron's reply. My first response is what products are being compared? I could just as easily ask why a $5,000 Sonicwall instead of a $300 Check Point FW? Assuming we are comparing the functions of an integrated FW/VPN let's start with VPN clients. On top of what Ron has already mentioned, CP now also comes with "clientless VPN" which uses SSL in the remote client browser, or uses Microsoft's native VPN client L2TP. Enabling client to sight VPN connections without installing software on the client box. CP also includes Smart Defense. SmartDefense actively protects organizations from all known, and most unknown network attacks. It blocks attacks by type and class using Check Point's patented Stateful Inspection technology and provides a single, centralized console delivering real-time information on attacks as well as attack detection, blocking, logging, auditing and alerting. CP is also the clear industry leader in centralized management capabilities. The Enterprise Management Console, SiteManager-1 and Provider-1 deliver centralized management for gateways and clients. VPN, Firewall and QoS management is completely integrated into a single GUI. Feel free to contact me anytime for many further functionality differences between Check Point and any other seemingly comparable products. Cisco now has products ranging from $595 at the low end to a 5-gigabyte blade for the Catalyst 6500 switch; all integrated into the overall Cisco product line for end-to-end security and manageability. Alex Ps Just to be upfront, I'm the Cisco Regional Manager for Oregon. Previous to that I was the Cisco Security Specialist, and, before Cisco, I used to own Checkpoint's largest reseller in Oregon. -----Original Message----- From: Ron Fowler [mailto:ron@private] Sent: Tuesday, August 27, 2002 2:26 PM To: Eric Kornberg; crime@private Subject: RE: CRIME Checkpoint versus Sonicwall For what it is worth.. I am assuming the SonicWALL product you are considering is the Pro 300. What Checkpoint supported platform are you considering?. Checkpoint's VPN-1 Pro Gateway running on a Nokia Platform would run 16 - 18K with normal discounts - still 3X the cost of the SonicWALL solution. Is VPN a requirement for your application? If so, Checkpoint seems to have has a stronger VPN offering. I have found that SonicWALL (Firmware 6.3) has limited centralized management for VPN clients, lacks an integrated personal firewall on the VPN client and provides no security verification checks before a VPN connection is established. SonicWALL lacks policy rules for individual employees or groups which may limit the granularity of access control. SonicWALL also lacks stateful failover of VPN and firewall connections which limits fault tolerance. I hope this helps. We are having an issue justifying the money it would take to implement a Checkpoint solution versus a SonicWALL solution. One is $40,000 and the other is $5,000 It would appear to the "over exposed to IT trade information" eye that there is not a lot of difference - except in the price? Am I missing something? Anyone want to comment? (This would be for mixed Unix and Windows networks) Thank you in advance for your information.... Eric K.
