Is it possible to set up another email address at cs.pdx.edu that is an auto-forward mechanism to crime@private? This way, it can be used rarely but offer an alternative for all of us in posting to the list from any other address. You can set up rules for this address so that anything CC'ed or to crime@private would get archived (those would presumably be from the list, or from someone who will end up double-posting). And any other message would be forwarded to the list. For instance, posttocrime2003@private You can then apply much stricter spam controls to this email address. And after some time (annually) we can just switch over to the next email addr in sequence (posttocrime2004). It's crude but gives us the flexibility while allowing you to use majordomo to completely "close" the list. By 'close', I mean invoke the majordomo option that restricts postings such that the originating email address must be subscribed to the list for the posting to be successful. In the past, this has been opposed as some people want to read at one location and reply from a different location (such as work and home). This would necessitate subscribing from multiple locations. A possible solution would be to subscribe using both accounts but put one account in 'postpone' or suspend mode that would not deliver the email but permit the posting. The majordomo software in use for our email server does not support this option. However, SPAM is beginning to affect the signal to noise ratio (although some may argue that point :-) on the list and there is the risk that PSU will become labeled by the various black hole services as an open relay. For these reasons, I would like to consider changing the policy on accepting email to the list such that only email from a subscribed address will be accepted. While this can't stop all SPAM, it does raise the bar and will keep certain types of SPAM off list. I would like to hear from those opposing this change. In this case, silence will be equated with assent. To keep the discussions of meta discussions to the minimum, I am asking that people email me directly unless you really feel the need to send your reply to the entire group. I will allow until November 7th for feedback and announce my decision at that time. Thank you for your feedback. --mark crime list owner
