    Then it sounds like it does not like the Cirrus Video card in the box. 
    Replacing the card for that model is a pain.

    You may have to add a parameter to the boot line to keep it from going
    into frame buffer mode.  If it is old enough, it may not understand VESA
    modes correctly.

    If you are booting from a recovery disc, it should not matter.
