Perl for System Administration
Managing multi-platform environments with Perl

is a good book for understanding logs and their function within
an OS. ALthough it is a perl book, the concepts can be easily applied
to log analysis using many tools. Searching, reporting analysis all are
covered in both theory and practice (sample scripts). The book is clear
without much techno babble.
