    Read GLBA & OCC Bulletins or HIPAA if your in the Financial or Health Care industry... In the event of criminal prosecution, it's easier to preserve the "chain of evidence" when your able to bring logs from one single server with yourself as the only user with access... Timestamps, hashes, and secure storage of your back-ups will make it easier:-)
