****** From: Randy May <rmayat_private> To: "'declanat_private'" <declanat_private> Subject: RE: Privacy and the First Amendment Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 13:07:24 -0400 Declan-- With all of the focus on privacy issues these days, I thought you and Politech readers might be interested in my column which appeared in this week's Legal Times. It suggests that many of the advocacy groups leading the privacy charge claim also to be strong First Amendment advocates, but they seem to ignore the first amendment implications of their proposals to limit the dissemination and use of personal information. This is true, as well, of the press, which should be more concerned about the potential for a slippery slope of eroding First Amendment jurisprudence. There is a need for balance, of course, but the First Amendment implications should not be ignored. The column is posted on our PFF website. http://www.pff.org/RandysPOVsinLegalTimes/MaysPOV043001.htm Randolph J.
