    Warrant issued for charity founder

    By DAVID ADAMS
    Tuesday 23 October 2001

The founder of Geelong-based computer-recycling charity PCs for Kids, Colin
Philip Bayes, has failed to appear in court to answer a fraud-related
    offence this month.

An arrest warrant was issued after Mr Bayes, formerly of the Geelong suburb
of Belmont, failed to appear at Geelong Magistrates Court on a charge of
obtaining property by deception between February 6, 1999, and March 16,
1999. Police said he had disappeared.

Police at Geelong criminal investigation unit also want to serve summonses
on Mr Bayes in relation to two further charges of obtaining property by
    deception.

A detective said yesterday that all three charges related to the accounts
of PCs for Kids and totalled about $60,000. He also confirmed that a
Mitsubishi Pajero, which was in the charity's name, had disappeared. It is
alleged Mr Bayes has taken the car.

PCs for Kids, founded by Mr Bayes in 1999, recycles old and obsolete
computer parts, rebuilding them into working computers that are then given
    to poor or disadvantaged children.

Mr Bayes was recently involved in a dispute with Microsoft after the United
States software giant refused to allow the charity to use its old software
free of charge in refurbished computers.
