Fascinating, especially the school district's contention that the "spokesperson" didn't know there was a policy regarding the release of student information... -------------------- School Board votes 6-1 to share student names -------------------- By Mary Shanklin Sentinel Staff Writer October 9, 2002 Effective immediately, anyone can get the names, addresses, phone numbers, ages and other information for Orange County's 150,000-plus schoolchildren. Reacting to news that the school district had been sharing the information with political consultants and others, the Orange County School Board voted 6-1 Tuesday to release the information to everyone. Parents may opt to keep their children's information private, possibly at the beginning of the school year. The issue raised so many questions that board members approved it in concept only, hoping to iron out the details after more study and input from the attorney general. The 90-minute debate was marked by members of the public demanding that the school district fire spokeswoman Jackie Johnson, who gave directory information to a pro-school political committee.
