In 1967, Israeli warplanes and torpedo boats engaged in a sudden and unprovoked attack on a U.S. government surveillance ship, the U.S.S. Liberty, that was on a peaceful mission in international waters. The attack killed 34 American sailors. The question remaining today is why the attack happened. Was it an accident, or an attempt by the Israelis to limit U.S. surveillance of their military actions against Egypt?
