grind 0.3 by Matthias Rosenkranz (http://freshmeat.net/users/rose/) Tuesday, August 7th 2001 14:13 Category: Security About: grind overwrites the given files with certain byte patterns in order to make it impossible to recover them from magnetic disks. It's based on a paper by Peter Gutmann, available at: http://rootprompt.org/article.php3?article=473 . It's useful for securely deleting sensitive data. This program is beta quality, so use it at your own risk. Changes: The name was changed from 'shred' to 'grind' to avoid confusion with GNU 'shred'. Furthermore, memory usage is now sane for bigger files. This version is noticably faster than previous ones, and has a new '-x' option (overwrite exact filesize).
