Sorry for interrupting the usual Microsoft rant, but Marc has mixed two things in his posting and concluding from other mails I got CC'ed, he's not the only one. So let's keep things clear... CDDB is (again) a Compact Disc Database and has nothing to do with DVDs, Microsoft and the Windows MediaPlayer for XP. CDDB queries _don't_ include a serial number of the querying player or software library and thus don't allow associations between requests and individuals. CDDB is a database service and definitely needs at least one database. The Microsoft Windows MediaPlayer for XP _does_ send a serial number to a Microsoft server and therefore Microsoft might be able to do such associations which have an impact on the user's privacy. There is no need for the player to send any packets when inserting a DVD.
