General President Bush is expected to appoint Microsoft chief security officer Howard Schmidt as vice chairman of the newly constituted federal Critical Infrastructure Protection Board. In that role, Schmidt would work with national cyber-security czar and board chairman Richard Clarke in overseeing protection of information systems for critical infrastructure. (Computer World, 14 December) Texas business leaders from the electric, telecommunications, airline and petroleum industries met at Rice University to discuss protecting infrastructures like computer systems, which oversee transportation, telecommunications, energy and water sources throughout Texas. The committee, organized by Texan Attorney General John Cornyn, plans to have a report on its findings completed by March and hopes Texas will become a model for other states as it works to implement some of its recommendations.
