    General

President Bush is expected to appoint Microsoft chief security officer
Howard Schmidt as vice chairman of the newly constituted federal
Critical Infrastructure Protection Board. In that role, Schmidt would
work with national cyber-security czar and board chairman Richard
Clarke in overseeing protection of information systems for critical
    infrastructure. (Computer World, 14 December)

Texas business leaders from the electric, telecommunications, airline
and petroleum industries met at Rice University to discuss protecting
infrastructures like computer systems, which oversee transportation,
telecommunications, energy and water sources throughout Texas. The
committee, organized by Texan Attorney General John Cornyn, plans to
have a report on its findings completed by March and hopes Texas will
become a model for other states as it works to implement some of its
    recommendations. (Associated Press, 17 December)
