Opting instead for smaller, sponsored seminars. Maybe the time is ripe to do an Oregon version of DefCon/BlackHat?

    There is a medium-large security con in the pacific northwest:
    CanSecWest <http://www.cansecwest.com/> in Vancouver, BC. It is smaller
    than DefCon or Black Hat, but still pulled about 300 people. I gave a
    talk this year. People at CanSec told me that the presentation quality
    was significantly better than at Black Hat, which in turn is better than
    at DefCon, which is mostly about drinking and naked women :)

    I wouldn't know about the comparisons, as I've never been to Black Hat,
    and I spent all my time at DefCon in the CtF game. I did find the
    presentations at CanSec to be quite good, but not quite up to the
    quality of USENIX Security.

    Dr. Crispy's spectrum of security conferences, ranging from theory to
    practice:

        * "Oakland" <http://www.ieee-security.org/TC/SP-Index.html> (IEEE
          Symposium on Security and Privacy:
              o the premium academic security conference
              o leading edge novel discoveries in computer security
              o relatively little practical relevance
              o about 200 people, mostly academics and industry research
              o $400
        * USENIX Security <http://www.usenix.org/events/sec02/>
              o a mix of theory and practice
              o about 500-700 people, a mix of academics, industrial
                researchers, security products people, and admins
              o IMHO the best practical research conference
              o $600
              o Disclaimer: most of my security publications
                <http://wirex.com/%7Ecrispin/> are in USENIX conferences,
                and I am on the program committee for USENIX Security 2003
                <http://www.usenix.org/events/sec03/>
        * CanSecWest <http://www.cansecwest.com/>/Black Hat
          <http://www.blackhat.com/>/DefCon <http://www.defcon.org/>
              o these are not research conferences: content presented is
                educational, not novel results
              o scale varies widely: 200 for CanSecWest, and (AFAIK) 1000+
                for Black Hat and DefCon
              o price also varies widely: $75 for DefCon, $1200US for Black
                Hat, and $1600Cdn for CanSecWest
