OpenBSD, like NetBSD and FreeBSD, uses newsyslog, which is part of the
OS release in all three.

It is indeed quite configurable, and no doubt better than homebrew for
most situations.

Regarding /dev/null filling, sometimes you have to bite the bullet and
install added WOM.
